What is the difference between the SM3 and the SM2?

The SM3 adds roof-rack installation to the four mounting options offered by the SM2. Its wider cross sections are designed to sit on top of compatible roof-rack crossbars, including aero-shaped bars up to 3 inches wide. Both models have a front wind deflector and also support magnets, suction cups, tripod mounting and upside-down suction cups for interior glass. Choose the SM3 for roof-rack installation; the SM2 is not intended for a roof rack.

Is the SM3 designed for roof-rack crossbars?

Yes. The SM3 is the roof-rack model in SatGear’s SM Series. Its wider cross sections provide room to sit on top of crossbars, which are commonly 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Check your rack’s bar width, spacing and mounting-slot alignment before purchasing. Use the roof-rack manufacturer’s hardware through the SM3’s mounting slots.

Are roof-rack fasteners included with the SM3?

No. Roof-rack fasteners are not included. Use the hardware specified by your roof-rack manufacturer through the SM3’s mounting slots. The product’s Hardware Only selection does not mean roof-rack fasteners are supplied.

Can I mount the SM3 without drilling?

Yes. Magnets or suction cups attach the SM3 to a suitable surface without drilling. For roof-rack installation, use compatible existing mounting points and the roof-rack manufacturer’s hardware through the SM3’s slots. Confirm that your rack’s mounting points align with the slots.

Can I adjust the magnet spacing to fit between roof ridges?

Yes. SatGear’s SM Series mounts, including the SM3, let you adjust the spacing between the magnets using the slotted mounting holes. Move the magnets inward or outward to position them between roof ridges or on top of them, depending on your roof’s layout. Each magnet should sit flat and make full contact with a suitable steel surface.

Can I adjust the suction cup spacing to fit between roof ridges?

Yes. SatGear’s SM Series mounts, including the SM3, let you adjust the spacing between the suction cups. Move them closer together or farther apart to suit your vehicle and the space between its roof ridges. Position each cup on a smooth, sufficiently flat area so it can form a complete seal.

Does the SM3 work inside a vehicle?

Yes. Use the same suction cups and mount them upside down on the SM3 to attach it to suitable interior sunroof, moonroof or panoramic roof glass. Make sure the glass area is large enough to fit the 19.25 × 12-inch mount, with enough clearance and a suitable area for each cup to seal fully. Place the cups against clean glass and pump each cup to create a vacuum seal.

Can I mount the SM3 on a tripod?

Yes. Tripod mounting is one of the SM3’s five installation options. It lets you raise your Starlink Mini off the ground for temporary setups away from the vehicle. Use a compatible tripod and check the connection before attaching the mount.

Does the SM3’s wind deflector help reduce wind noise?

Yes. The SM3 has a built-in front wind deflector designed to reduce wind noise and drag by directing airflow over the mount. It is part of the SM3’s streamlined design for vehicle use.

Can I change mounting locations later?

Yes. SatGear’s SM Series, including the SM1, SM2 and SM3, is designed so you can keep your mount and expand your setup over time. Think of Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless tool systems: once you have a battery, you can add compatible tools within that same battery system. With the SM3, you keep the same mount and add compatible brackets, attachments and accessories as your needs change, either when you first purchase it or later.

Options include the VSM Vertical Surface Mount, Ford Bed Adapter with VSM, Spare Tire Mount with Strap, and Pole Mount Adapter. Check the components and vehicle fit needed for the new location before purchasing. Attachments are sold separately, and more attachments are coming soon.

Excellent mount!! I’m using the magnets and I’ve had no problems driving 70 mph on the interstate for 12 hours.

Fit

I had to turn sideways to fit my Prinsu rack. I used some spacers from local hardware store and made it work. It’s a solid mount, but if you don’t have a how to make this work attitude it might not work for you. If you want pictures of my mount hit me up. [****]

I’ve tried the SATGEAR SM3 5-in-1 Starlink Mini Roof Rack Mount on three of my vehicles now, and I’m seriously impressed. I drive fast through the Columbia River Gorge on I-84 in Oregon, where the wind can get pretty intense—and this thing holds strong with no problem at all. Super easy to install, and it stays locked in place no matter what. It’s built tough and gives me peace of mind knowing my Starlink isn’t going anywhere. Highly recommend it if you need something dependable for high-speed or windy conditions.
