Frequently asked questions
Is the SM2 designed for a roof rack?
The SM2 is not intended for roof-rack installation. Choose the SatGear SM3 for a roof rack. The SM3’s wider cross sections are designed to sit on top of roof-rack crossbars, which are typically 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Use your roof-rack manufacturer’s hardware through the SM3’s mounting slots; roof-rack fasteners are not included.
Does the SM2 need a tripod adapter?
No adapter is needed when your tripod has a 1/4-20 mounting screw. The screw threads directly into the SM2’s built-in 1/4-20 hole. Check your tripod’s screw size before attaching it.
Can I mount the SM2 without drilling?
Yes. The SM2 is designed to attach using magnets or suction cups on a suitable mounting surface. No drilling is required, and you do not need a drill or other drilling tools to install it.
How strong are the SM2’s rubber magnets?
The SM2’s compact, rubber-coated magnets have over 130 pounds of pull force. Although small, they are extremely strong. For magnetic mounting, use a suitable steel surface.
Can I adjust the magnet spacing to fit between roof ridges?
Yes. SatGear’s SM Series mounts, including the SM2, allow you to adjust the spacing between the magnets. On the SM2, four mounting slots on the bottom let you move the magnets inward or outward. This allows you to position the magnets between your roof ridges or on top of them, depending on your roof’s layout.
Can I adjust the suction cup spacing to fit between roof ridges?
Yes. SatGear’s SM Series mounts, including the SM2, allow you to adjust the spacing between the suction cups. You can move them closer together or farther apart to suit your vehicle and the space between its roof ridges. Position each cup on a smooth, sufficiently flat area so it can form a complete seal.
Does the SM2 work inside a vehicle?
Yes. Use the same suction cups and mount them upside down on the SM2 to attach it inside your vehicle to suitable sunroof, moonroof or panoramic roof glass, including Tesla vehicles with exposed glass roofs. Make sure the glass roof is large enough to fit the mount, with enough clearance for the SM2 and a suitable area for each cup to seal fully. Place the cups against clean glass and pump each cup to create a vacuum seal. You can also use other interior glass surfaces where the mount has enough clearance and every cup can seal fully.
Can I change mounting locations later?
Yes. SatGear’s SM Series, including the SM1, SM2 and SM3, is designed so you can keep your mount and expand your setup over time. Think of Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless tool systems: once you have a battery, you can add many compatible tools within that same battery system. With the SM2, you keep the same mount and add compatible brackets, attachments and accessories as your needs change, either when you first purchase it or later.
The SM2 supports additional configurations using compatible accessories, including the Vertical Surface Mount, Ford bed adapter system and spare tire mount. Check which components are needed for the new location before purchasing.
Does the wind deflector actually make this mount quieter?
Yes. In our testing against other mounts on the market, the SM2 was noticeably quieter at highway speeds. Its wind deflector and low-profile design help reduce the wind noise and whistling that can occur when air hits more exposed mounting surfaces. We designed the SM2 to sit lower and create a more aerodynamic profile.
How do I choose between the SM and MM Series?
The SM Series offers a streamlined mounting design. The MM Series adds an enclosed aluminum design with a polycarbonate dish cover. Compare the protection and mounting arrangement you need before choosing.
